“A Christian should use these arts to the glory of God, not just as tracts, mind you, but as things of beauty to the praise of God. An art work can be a doxology in itself.”
~Francis A. Schaeffer, Art & the Bible~
What do you get when you meld book art, mixed media, art journaling, the Bible, and devotions?
Simply put, you get the brand new creatologie kit called "Journaling Your Faith: Courage & Confidence"!
For the past several months, I've been thinking about ways to incorporate art into my spiritual journey and how to tie them together and then how to help others do the same. When I began searching online, I found that there were soooo many sites and photos of various Bible journaling pages and wow, some of them are just simply amazing. The lettering, doodling and drawing/coloring is beautifully done in the pages of the Bible...but I knew without a doubt that this wasn't the avenue for me. That level of drawing and attention to detailed lettering isn't really what I'm good at. But, here's what I can do really well and have been doing since I started teaching.
I love to take different areas of arts and crafts and meld them together into something both beautiful and useful. From the time I started teaching and creating/kitting projects from the creatologie studio, I looked for new and different ways to approach scrapbooking...stamping, fabric and sewing, paints and inks, textures, dimensional elements, and book making all became part of my signature style of memory art.
I guess it's really a no-brainer to take the memory art projects I teach at workshops and offer online and follow the same type of format in a devotional Bible art journal. Interestingly enough, while I'm sure the concept exists, this combo just doesn't appear very much online. So, here's to something new, different and unique, right?
You may be curious about why the topic of faith journaling. First (and you may not know this) my educational background is in teaching...Christian Education in undergrad and Elementary Ed in grad school...and this after a short stint (one semester) in interior design. So, really, it's another blend...art and design, my Christian faith and communicating it to others, and the love of teaching.
Second, and really the most important reason, is the need many of us have to slow down and spend some quality time with God. We hear so much "busy, busy, busy" talk...we hear it from friends and family, read it online and of course, it comes right from our own mouths, doesn't it? I'm convinced that it really isn't so much that we are so busy, but rather, we are super distracted. How's this for a scenario...wake up, maybe get coffee or tea...maybe not. Check the phone. Oh, texts and emails...goody. Respond as needed. Oh, a sale! Need to get some stuff. Go to the site and order. Then, need to FB about it...and oops, got caught up in everyone's oh-so-interesting posts...so good that I need to interact. Sound familiar? Maybe it's not an everyday thing, but combine all of that with family responsibilities, household chores, work, church, etc. and pretty soon, we are in the land of overwhelm. And, maybe God gets a few minutes here and there...something like "thanks for the food", "need some help", or "praying for my friend". I'm not saying that the distractions and interactions are all bad and unnecessary...they are definitely not! What I'd like to propose, though, is being a little more proactive about taking some alone time interacting with our Maker...and what better way than to blend it with our love of art?
Journaling Your Faith: Courage & Confidence is a hand made book designed to pull together Bible verses (many well-known and loved), dimensional art/mixed media, and interaction pages for you to journal your thoughts, questions and results. The project is kitted for a hand stitched flip book, with the theme of Courage in the front half and Confidence in the back half.
I start with Courage, which is what we need to get moving, and then head over to Confidence, which comes from exercising our courage and seeing results. What a wonderful way to interact with God, to see and journal exciting things that are happening in our lives, and to then affect change in our world!
I've created five two page spreads in each half of the book. One side of the spread features the verse and the facing page is all about your thoughts, results, questions, etc. You might even have a card or flap on that page to give you more space to write!
Over the years, I've heard many of you say that you just don't have large chunks of time available to sit down and create a project. I totally get that! With that in mind, I created this project/kit as a 12 week work in progress! Each week, you would focus on a verse...and as you are going through your life that week, I know for a fact that the verse will come to mind and you will have a chance to put it into practice. I know this is true...it's been happening to me as I've been putting this project together. So, I'm working on a courage page and there's a challenge that comes up...it's like God is saying to me, "What are you going to do about it...do you have the courage to do what you need to do or is this book just an academic exercise?" Ahhh, accountablility, right? Rather than overwhelm with lots of verses (the "more is more" concept) this project focuses on principles that you can put into practice every single day. Maybe you have a few minutes a day to focus on the spread, or maybe you can sit down for an hour or two and complete the pages. Then, during the week, you can fill in some of the results you are experiencing, the challenges you've had to face, etc.
It could be that you are a finisher...you can certainly do a spread a day, or even sit down and do the journal in a weekend...then take the time to do the interactive parts.
Flexibility is what it's all about...what works for you to be able to get away from the distractions and spend a bit of time focusing on God and how he wants us to live.
Here's what's in your kit. I will provide the materials to make the book as well as the papers, fabrics, ribbons, trims, elements and ephemera to create the pages. On many of the pages, I have pre-printed the verses for you but, if you love lettering, I'll include some extra parchment paper for you to create your very own letters. A full set of instructions, with lots of pix, will be provided for you as a download after the kits are shipped...and there's even a bit of a devotional tucked into each two page spread...context, a bit of explanation, and maybe some meaningful questions to ask. You'll need some craft paints, inks, basic watercolor paints or pencils, and drawing chalks (most of which I'm guessing you will already have or can substitute)...those will be used to create the backgrounds.
Your verse pages are definitely layered and dimensional and there are some fun techniques that I'll teach you along the way.
