If you are a fan of makeovers, before and afters and shows like Fixer Upper, I think you are going to enjoy this post!
From the time I could read, I remember grabbing Mom's Better Homes & Gardens magazine as soon as it came and checking out the remodeling articles where they showed the Before and After shots of the featured rooms. And then, when I got older, it was the before and after makeovers...in makeup, hair and clothing. I'm still a HUGE fan of the before and after shots...to me, they are inspirational and really get me thinking about the potential of something. Maybe it's a small room redo, a new hairstyle, a new color of lipstick and in some cases, just a perfect adornment for an outfit.
Given that, it shouldn't be a surprise to know that I do this with book art and my projects...all the time. I create a book and do the cover first...because for me, the cover totally shapes the interior pages. But, before I glue down the cover elements, I leave them out and do what I call "circling the table". Taking a little time to observe from a distance, kind of detaching myself, often lets me change something that will improve the balance or symmetry, create a stronger focal point , or in some cases realize that the cover or book needs something more...a bit of an adornment.
The idea for a tassel along the side of a book (which was the last workshop project) came from that bit of circling. But what I didn't mention is that the idea for the workshop book actually came from a book that I did (but didn't post for sale) as an "I Start, You Finish" book. It's done in Shades of White and it definitely needed an adornment, hence the tassel. (And, by the way, if you continue reading, you'll see that it's now up.)
After offering the tassel kits last week, (Shades of White are sold out, BUT there are still a few left in Shades of Gray, Pink and Aqua) I decided to play with the samples I made to see if they enhanced any of the existing hand made albums/journals in my collection. Without further ado, here they are...the BEFORE & AFTER shots of two albums.
This was the Holiday Journal project I taught at Scrapbook Island's Creative Escape last year. On the left is the project as taught...on the right....A PERFECT ADORNMENT...the Shades of Gray Thimble Tassel tied to the top of the spine stitching.
And, here's another...
Whoa baby, Rust and Roses went from beautiful to detailed, super dimensional and beautiful...again, A PERFECT ADORNMENT...this one, the Shades of Pink Thimble Tassel.
It could be that you have some handmade albums or journals, or even a purchased planner or journal that could use an adornment. May I suggest one of the Thimble Tassel kits? Perfect as a finishing touch...a very fun and actually quite simple way to enhance your book.
