This weekend, I came across a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson that reminded me about myself, my blog, and why I blog. Here's what Mr. Emerson said:
"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment."
When I started my blog, I named it "Be Yourself: Live With Passion". I wanted it to be an expression of who I was, my likes and dislikes, etc. It was a reminder that I needed to be true to myself...even if it meant that sometimes I would be going against the current.
There are days that I find myself fighting peer pressure to be something I'm not.
Or struggling to emulate a style that just isn't me.
There's very little contentment being in that state of mind...at least for me.
Do you find yourself in a struggle against being someone other than the real you?
Do you ever find yourself saying yes to doing something, being somewhere, or being part of a program that just isn't you? It's either something you aren't gifted to do, something you are not passionate about or maybe it will take you away from something that is really necessary to do. But, it ends up on your "To Do" list...because you don't want to disappoint your friends, or your family, or your pastor, or your boss, or anyone else who is important to you...
Maybe the fear of being isolated from your "tribe", whomever they may be, keeps you from stepping back and evaluating whether what you are doing is adding or taking away from who you are and your purpose in life.
Do you ever find yourself wondering what someone else would think if you made a change?
Maybe something as simple as repainting your front door makes you wonder if the neighbors will be upset.
Do you ever buy an outfit that just grabbed you at the store...and then let it hang in the closet because it's different than anything you've ever worn...or different than anyone you hang around with would ever wear?
Do you have to think and rethink a new do...maybe something fun and sassy instead of the same old cut and color?
Do you ever crave taking your craft or hobby further? To create out of the box and learn something new (like painting, soldering, quilting, bookmaking, sculpting, etc., etc., etc.)? Do you wonder if your friends will be talking about you behind your back...and criticizing you for stepping out of the box? (You know, kind of like the crabs who pull the one trying to get out of the boiling pot right back into it!)
Do you struggle with confronting someone who wronged you and let them get away with it because you don't want to "stir up trouble"? Or maybe sweep some things under the rug that should be confronted and swept away for fear of repercussion? Or maybe stay quiet instead of expressing an opinion which is different because it might not be a popular stand to take? Or, maybe just going along with the group when on the inside, you are longing to do something else?
Have you found yourself squirming a little while reading? Yeah, well, me too!
I think that most of us struggle to be ourselves...and to find the balance between pleasing others and being true to who we are. I know that I sure do!
I do agree with Emerson...to be yourself really is the greatest personal accomplishment.
You are special.
So, be yourself...live with passion...and watch yourself bloom!
