Grandmother's Buttons
They fascinated me when I was a child.
They still fascinate me.
My grandmother had her buttons in a large candy tin and I would patiently sift through all of the plain buttons to find the fancies. I would lay them all out and think about what I would do with them if they were mine. I would do this often. I loved buttons.
Not much has changed.
I brought an old friend home this past week. That friend is Victoria magazine, now back in publication after resting for several years. There's something about that magazine that makes me want to try harder, to excel, to challenge and stretch myself. The details are amazing. Guess what I found in this issue? Grandmother's Buttons. A funky store set in a historic bank in Louisiana that sells antique buttons and things made from antique buttons, it is right up my alley. I'm looking forward to seeing and touching this little vintage beauty.
Even though my grandmother has been gone for 20 years this month, her influence on me in so many areas of life remains strong. And, I've never gotten over my fascination with buttons. Not at all.
Did you have someone who influenced you that way? A fascination with something from childhood days?

oh my goodness as I am cutting butons off of old "fat" clothes I stop to read your blog! LOL! I love buttons also. I have an old sweater of my grandmothers and was told she was going to get rid of it but I kept it and it doesn't have any buttons on it and been wearing with a pretty old pin of hers looks cute but now am "searching" for the perfect buttons. Of course living in NY I have the garment district to search too many stores but how can I choose? Buttons are so amazing. I guess we are on the same page today! Happy Sunday! Hugz Grace

I love buttons...seriously use them on almost every scrapbook page or project I do!
As for influence, my grandmother (who has been gone 6 years now and I miss terribly) taught me how to sew and bake...my other two loves in life!! Every time I bake a cookie or sit down and do my needlework I think of her and that without her teaching me the things that she loved to do, I wouldn't have them in my life...she was an amazing lady!!

this topic really hit home for me. I remember vividly playing with my grandmothers buttons and then she would let me pick on to keep and we would play button button who's got the button. And I remember that magazine. It's been years since I've read it. I thought I saw it and b&N today, and then you posted this. Hummmmm

Oh, your post makes me think of my grandmother. We lived across the country from her, so I didn't know here well. But the few times we went to visit, I always played with her HUGE jar of buttons. As a matter of fact, about 15 years ago I made a picture frame for her photo that is completely covered in buttons. It makes me smile just to think of it.
