good things...

Life_stories_holiday_peek It's been a busy, but good busy, weekend.

I noticed this morning that Scrap Scene had linked to my blog about a project I taught on Friday.  Since that project, the party hat, was one that I had made just for decoration, I thought I'd post a peek at one we actually did. :)

Between doing two Christmas layouts in Friday's class and going shopping with Ashley at the new San Tan Marketplace, I am definitely getting in the holiday spirit.  The Marketplace was great...they just opened on Friday so there's still a lot to do but listen to this lineup of stores...all on one little block of the outdoor mall.  There's Coach on the corner, J Jill right next door and a Sephora next to that...just not yet opened...then a Clark's store.  Across the street, there's Chico's, Coldwater Creek and Ann Taylor Loft.  If the planners had asked me what I wanted all in one location, that would have been my list...and all just steps away from each other.  Awesome, isn't it?

Scrapgala_books Added to that, I've been furiously putting together my kits for Scrap Gala, which is just around the corner in November.  The kits need to get shipped to New Brunswick in the next couple of days so I really need to get into gear.  Yikes.  Here are some of the books that will be converted into white holiday books...I think that the white book is becoming one of my signature projects.  It's been a lot of fun to make them because I do them differently each time I teach a white book class.  Keeps things interesting for me and for the class, I hope!

Christmas_album_cover The other thing that has me in the holiday spirit is the fact that I did my album cover for this year's Christmas album.  I got tired of shifting all of the product that I was saving for the album from one spot to another and finally decided to just get efficient and get it done.  It's done!  I love the 7 gypsies velvet rub-ons and the Prima black bling flourish...it looks like the cover is dotted with little bits of black onyx.

Let the holidays begin!  What sorts of fun things have you been working on to prep for the holidays?

By the way, I forgot to mention that my friend Jennifer interviewed me a few weeks ago and that interview is posted on Scrap Jazz...FUN!  Thanks, Jennifer!

a very fun class today...

Life_stories_1026_food2 It was a Life Stories-Holiday Traditions class at Scrapbooks Etc. and we had a chance to do layouts about the fall holidays as well as Christmas.  Glimmer Mist was definitely a fun product...it's available in about a dozen colors at Scrapbooks Etc. and in almost all of the 60 colors at Scrapbook.com (a good place to buy from if you're not in the Phoenix area).

Of course, with Halloween just around the corner, we had to have some fun treats like Two Bite Brownies...my story about these brownies is that because they only have two bites, they have no calories.  Someone in the class today said that if there are calories in the first bite, the second bite negates them.  Either way...they were a great treat.  I served them on my 3 tiered cake stand, complete with a little halloween party hat.

If you're interested in making a party hat, you can get some fun templates here.  I just used the plain one, cut it out of ivory cardstock, inked it with Color Box Chalk ink, then added the image, glitter, ribbon, trims, buttons and bling.  Can you imagine what a fun project this would be to make with kidlets?

Before I go, just wanted to pass along one happiness secret from the book 100 Simple Secrets of Happy People:  "Surround Yourself with Pleasant Aromas".  I like that one a lot...it's easy! Think spicy fall candles, fresh apple pie, pumpkin pie, butternut squash soup...I'm off to pull out the candles.

Have a fabulous (and fabulous smelling) weekend!

Halloween Tales...

Fabric_pumpkinsI'm not much into Halloween these days and to say that I am would be quite a tall tale, to say the least.  There was a time, however, when it was definitely an event to look forward to.

Would you have guessed, for example, that as a 12 year old, I was an active participant in Mischief Night and soaped up all of my neighbor's windows (that's one neighbor...all of their windows)?  For any of you who don't know what Mischief Night is, it's the night where adults quake in their shoes, hoping that their windows don't get soaped or egged or worse yet, that their mailbox doesn't get blown up with an M-80.  My best friend's dad actually got up on the roof with a water hose and blasted any kids who happened to walk on their property!  It's a pretty safe assumption that any kid that's out that night walking up to a house that isn't his is definitely looking to make mischief!

I know that historically, Mischief Night takes place the same night as Halloween and it's supposed to be the trick part if you don't give a treat.  Where I grew up, Mischief Night occurred the evening before Halloween, which really doesn't make sense because you don't know if you're going to get a treat or not...well, except in my case that one year where my parents dressed up as ostriches (figuratively speaking) and I played some mischief games...without going into details, let's just say that this particular neighbor got the "what comes around" part of that saying that night!

Then there was the year that my brother and I, along with a few friends, went Trick or Treating in the neighborhood.  We were on the street next to where I lived, when I noticed a car at the curb and a kid getting out of the car.  This kid followed us to the house where we were going, then proceeded to follow us from house to house, with the car creeping along curbside.  The kid was dressed up and masked and didn't say a word to us...just followed us...and I was getting a little freaked out.  Finally, I asked the kid what his name was...no response.  Asked him again...again, no response.  By this time, I was getting mad.  I told him that if he didn't tell me who he was, I was gonna rip the mask off his face.  He reluctantly removed his mask and much to my surprise, it was my younger cousin, Bobby!  He lived about an hour away and it turns out that my uncle had this last minute brainstorm to surprise all of us...they dropped my aunt off at my parents' house, then drove until they found us.  That was a funny trick on my uncle's part...and definitely a memorable Halloween

Another memorable year was the year that Vern and I were part-time youth directors for the High School group at our local church.  My brother had just purchased an old Pennsylvania farmhouse and barn on quite a bit of property; he was planning to renovate it and sell it.  It was an amazing property...one I wouldn't mind living on at all.  But, at that time, it was a disaster.  Wood rot, spiders, mice and the smell of bat poop...very yucky distinctive smell...OK, do you see what stage I'm setting here?  A haunted house, of course.  So, Vern, my brother and a couple of guys from our young married couples group got together to plan this house.  It was totally amazing.  My part in it included peeling grapes (for eyeballs) and cooking a vat of spaghetti...fun!  They had creepy noises, a coffin that they built with one of the guys in it who periodically sat up and went after the girls with an ax in his hand. There were bats that "flew" into peoples' faces.  Then there was the dark tunnel they had to crawl through...while "blood" was being poured over their heads...I can't even remember all of the gross and creepy things those guys came up with...all I can say is that most of the girls were totally freaked out and ran screaming out of the house.

I had spent a considerable amount of time planning the party...cleaning and setting up the old barn with hay bales, corn stalks and pumpkins...and it was truly an authentic and amazing Halloween party...with tons of food.  We were joined by the College and Career and Young Married groups to have one big, lively event...one that was talked about for years.

Of course, as a mom, I totally got into the spirit of costumes and face paint with Ashley.  In fact, one year we were dressing up at work and I went as Cleopatra.  I had the bangs and straight hair...pretty much her identical hair style so it was an easy costume...just add the right clothes, lots of makeup and gold jewelry and voila!  We have Cleopatra.

This year, it's pretty much a few gourds and pumpkins and lots of memorable tales!  And, a funky blog banner.

Do you have any tales to share?

Happy Wednesday and hope you enjoy planning your Halloween this year.

Tag Monday

Tag_inspiration_2 Yesterday, I was cleaning out my nightstand drawer and pulled out a stack of garment tags.

I have this thing about collecting unique clothing tags.  If I give them a second glance, then they are worth collecting.  Garment tags have some of the most awesome graphics, use of colors and fonts of any printed matter out there and they inspire me.

So much so that one of the projects I created for Artful Memories was a book made out of unusual tags.  Then, months later, I taught a tag travel journal class called "Better Than a Tag Sale" at Ink It.

Tag_book So, like I said, I have this thing for tags.

I decided to blog about tags being an inspiration, blah, blah... then last night, I get tagged by Cari.  OK, for sure it's Tag Monday.

I met Cari last weekend when I was in Edmonton.  She was one of the instructors and is sweet, kind and genuinely nice...the kind of person you'd like to have as a neighbor or friend or cropping pal.  On top of that, she is really talented...check out some of the layouts on her blog...they're awesome.

OK, so the tag goes like this:

1.  Link to the person's blog who tagged youDone.

2.  List seven weird things about yourself...OK, weirdness is in the eye of the beholder...let's call it "unique things" about yourself.  Done

I think I did five things several months ago, but I'm sure there are enough "unique" things about me that I can find seven more.  ;)

  • I have a hard time sleeping at night without white noise
  • I don't like peanut butter and jelly together...don't even like the smell of them together
  • Hate hair in the bathroom sink
  • Russian was the first language I learned
  • I'm religious about taking my vities every day...that's vitamins, not taking my vital signs:)...not that unique!
  • I love potatoes but French fries are my least favorite potatoes
  • Gotta have my coffee first thing in the morning.

So there you have it...and Torm, I bet you remember the one from the first list that totally got you fired up...wearing socks to bed!

OK, enough of my uniqueness...on to the next step.

3.  Tag seven people to do the same and post a comment on their blogDone

OK, I wanted to tag seven people I'd never tagged before...so here goes.

  • Anam, another one of the instructors at CSCK-Edmonton.  She's the kind of person who instantly becomes your friend...I was so happy to be able to meet her and spend some time with her.
  • Marirosa, who is so sparky...enthusiastic, zesty, and fun to be around.  Love her.
  • Dee, who is one of my "Down Under" scrapping pals mates...and an awesome photographer...check out her recent pictures taken in Cambodia
  • Dana, who was one of my Creative Escape cropping pals...the more time I spend with her, the more things I find we have in common.  She is a fantastic stamper and card maker...and we like a lot of the same foods.
  • Stella, who wrote me an email this weekend and asked me to make mention of her new journaling blog...here's a great opportunity to journal about your uniquenesses (is that a word?...doubt it!)
  • Janine, one of the most patient people I know...a volunteer and instructor at CSCK-Edmonton, a cowboy hat wearer, and the only person I know who treats beer like a cocktail by mixing orange juice into it...she couldn't convince me to try it...she says it's great and I'll just take her word for it
  • Debby, whom I've known for quite a while but haven't seen since CHA early this year.  She is such a creative and talented designer and instructor...can't wait to spend some time chatting again!

OK, I'm off to post comments on seven blogs.

Did you happen to notice the list maker gene present throughout the whole post?  Tee Hee...it's a sickness.  By the way, for those who do PDA lists, how in the world do you staple a ribbon or a piece of paper you need to take shopping with you...or insert a brad you need to color match...just curious...

Hope you enjoyed Tag Monday!

Are you a list maker?

Listscollage I am...absolutely.

I have a list for everything.

I start my morning with a To Do list.

Then I have an ongoing shopping list on a little chalkboard in my kitchen.  When it's time to hit the grocery store, that list gets transferred onto a more portable list.

I have little bits and pieces of paper here and there with lists of sites I want to check out, people I want to Google,  supplies that sounded interesting, books I want to look at on amazon etc., etc., etc.

Then there are the quotes that are worth saving...they're on some notebook paper somewhere.

I've got a wish list of things that I'd like to get...someday.

Can you see how all of these lists can become an organizational nightmare?  My problem is that I have so many lists that I can't keep track of them.  Earlier this week, I couldn't find my to do list and while rooting through some of the stuff on my counter, I happened upon a list from last week...Ha!  found it...but a little too late.  :))

I'm not much of a computer list maker...I love paper (big surprise), the feel of the leather index tabs on my Dooney day planner, the texture of the thin sheets of parchment paper in the note pad, and being able to fold my 4x6 index card lists and slip them into my purse.

Anyway, I decided to take a page out of my friend Jeanette's book of organization and make myself a book to house my lists.  It's been so much fun to put together.  It's got lots of pockets, clips and folders so that I can take out the old and put in the new lists.  Now all I have to keep track of is my little book!

How do you stay organized?  Are you a list maker?  Do you use paper lists or a PDA?  Would love to hear your thoughts.

Happy Saturday...relax and keep the lists short!

cooking inspired by...

....of all things, a fiction novel.

Playing_for_pizza On Sunday, when I was traveling home from Edmonton, I breezed through John Grisham's latest book, Playing for Pizza.  It's light reading...definitely not legally or politically inspired as are many of his books...and it's about a washed up NFL player who goes to Parma, Italy to play American football with the city's team.

The book's plot is OK but the impact of the writing came in the form of cooking inspiration.  Parma is the home of Parmesan cheese and throughout the book, Grisham describes the foods they are eating in great detail, which, of course got me craving Italian dishes with Parmesan cheese.  On Tuesday, I trucked off to Sam's Club, looking for fresh Parmesan and something to cook with it...veal or chicken.  It ended up being chicken and Parmesan aged for 24 months...yum!  I love homemade chicken parmesan!

So yesterday, Ashley was on for dinner duty...she too, had just read the book and was also inspired to cook Italian.  Her menu included Pork Tenderloin, Parmesan green beans and stewed potatoes with fresh tomato...do you see the Parmesan trend here?

Anyway, her meal was fantastic...and we decided to eat in true Italian style...al fresco on our patio.  The wine was a perfect pairing...Folonari Pinot Noir...from Italy, of course...chosen by our resident sommelier, Vern.  Do you want to venture a guess as to our dessert?  Yep, it was gelato...pistachio and chocolate for me.

Alfresco4

I do know that my waistline can't afford for me to be inspired like this too often...but I think I've got the Parmesan thing out of my system for a bit.

Isn't it great how inspirations can come from such unusual sources?

Enjoy your Thursday!

vintage heaven...

I promised that I'd share some of the little goodies that I picked up at the Papier Valise over the weekend.  I'm definitely in vintage heaven!

                              Goodies_from_pv4

                              Goodies_from_pv2

Now I just have to find a few extra hours to do some fun creations with these little pretties...maybe this weekend...hopefully!

the mall invasion...

Pirateship What a sight to see...

Hundreds of women scurrying through the mall looking for their next class...rolling carts in black, pink or lime green...colorful totes filled to the brim with enough tools to build a house...scrapbooking classes on the pirate ship smack in the middle of the mall...it will definitely go down in my journals as my most unique teaching experience.

Canada's Scrapbooking Crop for Kids was a great time and for an amazing cause...raising money for the local children's hospital in each of the cities that hosted the event.  There aren't enough words out there to thank Trisha Ladouceur and her team of volunteers for coordinating this event.  Trisha gave up the better part of a year and a good part of her house while putting this event together.  She lived with cardboard boxes of donated product and kits and she and her family pretty much ate and slept the event for months on end.  Huge thanks go to them for all that they've done...from the bottom of my heart.

Instructors A big thanks also to cherryArte for sponsoring my classes.  The students and I totally appreciated Lu's generosity with the sheets of rub-ons and chipboard shapes included in each kit.  Lots of great product to use in future projects, for sure!

Here are some of the teachers with Trisha on Saturday night...one thing for sure with teaching at a mall...there's no shortage of eating spots!

One of the highlights of the weekend was meeting Cheryl Mezzetti, design team coordinator for Creative Imaginations, traveling instructor and local instructor at Right at Home Scrapbooking where I taught in August.   Sharon, you told me that I'd really like Cheryl and you're absolutely right.  We totally connected...it was great to be able to spend some time together and find all that common ground!  Cheryl, you totally rock...you are an amazingly creative artist...and a fun, down to earth person!

With_janice Another one of the highlights of the weekend was to meet Janice of Papier Valise in person.   Papier Valise has been one of my favorite online sources for one of a kind accents and ephemera and even though I'd ordered for years and Janice and I emailed each other, we had never met.  Well, all I can say is that the two of us can chat for a loooong time without running out of things to say.  We were able to take advantage of a couple of hours of down time and sit and chat in her booth at the vendor fair.  Of course, I brought home a bag of goodies...it's cool seeing some of the products in person...sometimes web photos just don't do them justice.  I'll shoot some pix today of some of my favorites and post them later this week.  Janice has an amazing eye for "stuff"...truly...and you won't be disappointed with what she sends you.  If you have a chance to check out her site...have fun!

On a final note, as I was sitting in the hotel lobby early yesterday morning (4:45 a.m.!) waiting for my shuttle, the guy behind the desk asked me if I was part of the Crop for Kids event.  I told him that I was and he proceeded to ask me if we were getting together to talk about farming different crops to grow good food for children...I had to swallow the huge guffaw that was about to erupt...and informed him that it was actually scrapbooking.  His response was one typical of a guy who has no family members involved in the craft..."Scrapbooking, eh?  Interesting."  Right...I'm sure he found it interesting...he had nothing more to say. :))

Hugs and Happy Monday.

it's going to be in the 90's today...

...so why am I packing my winter clothes?

Standing_open This afternoon, I'm heading up to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to teach at Canada's Scrapbooking Crop for the Kids on behalf of my friends at cherryArte in Australia.

So, it'll be in the 90's when I leave and in the 30's when I arrive in Edmonton tonight.  Brrrrr!  That's going to be a shock to the system.

I'm really excited about teaching this little "Good Times" book and about making new friends.

If you are planning to be there, can't wait to see you.

By the way, look for pix of the world famous Edmonton Mall...that's where the event is being held.  Good thing I've got some room in my suitcase!

Happy Thursday!

surfacing...

It's really been a loooong four days and I'm finally surfacing.

My accounting reports are done and faxed over to my accountant and Excel and I have gotten to know each other quite well over the past four days.   However, we are NOT friends.   Instead of being the Gesso Queen, I definitely became the Spreadsheet Queen.  Let me tell you, I'd much rather be covered in gesso...any day of the week.  :))

I was able to complete a couple of samples for my Life Stories class at the end of the month at Scrapbooks, Etc. and taught a Scrapping Sampler class there on Saturday morning...yay for a little bit of creativity to keep me from going crazy with all the numbers!

                              Colorsofyourworld_wrapupimage_wk8_2

Anyway, back to the point of this post.  THANKS SO VERY MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR CREATIVE PROJECTS WITH ME!  I had this vision of having a retreat with everyone who posted in attendance...and it would be like this huge SHOW 'N TELL, with everyone being able to show off their creativity!  Can you just imagine that?????  How fun would that be????

And, WE DO HAVE A WINNER!!!!!

ROBYN S., you are the winner of a mini book kit...14 keys to an extraordinary life.  Yay!

Robyn, if you would e-mail me your address, I'll get your kit out in the mail.

Thanks again everyone for playing!
