How would you like to win...

...a copy of Lifelines?

Lifelines_coverfinal It's the end of March and it's time for me to give away something and since I have no leftover kits from any classes (that's a good thing because that means full classes with no cancellations), I decided to give away a copy of my new book which I co-authored with Tena Sprenger.

Here's all you have to do.  Post a comment about what you would like to see taught in a class...a project, a technique...anything related to memory art, scrapping, altered art...it's what you want to learn and your chance to tell all of us about it.  Think about what you would do in an ideal class...then share it.

I'll leave this open until Monday 6:00 p.m. and then someone in the family will draw a winner and LIFELINES will be yours!

You can play even if you already have a copy...all of us have scrapping friends who have birthdays...or who love to get gifts, just because.

Looking forward to hearing from you and excited about sharing with you my favorite book to date...just filled to the brim with ideas and inspiration!

moving right along...

It seems like time is really flying by, especially the past couple of weeks.  There are always projects in the works, gardening that needs to be done, classes to teach, family time...you know...you are probably in the same days flying by time zone.

Life_stories_clearly_statedprecious Yesterday, I had a fun, messy and inspirational class at Scrapbooks, Etc.

We worked with transparent materials-Heidi Swapp ghost shapes and silhouettes, Hambly Studio pre-printed transparent sheets and plain transparencies to stamp on...plus the class had a chance to play with Ranger alcohol inks...for most of them, it was the first opportunity to do so.  What a fun time it was.

Most of us left with ink stained hands...although I did provide disposable gloves for anyone who had to have clean hands when they left the class!  It seems like ink stained hands don't bother most of us...it's definitely a sign that we love what we do!

I also just wanted to say that I totally appreciate it when people who have taken my classes bring in layouts and projects they have done that were inspired by a class they took.  There are some incredibly talented people out there...which makes me wonder why THEY aren't the ones teaching the class!  Definitely kind of humbling.  Thanks for sharing your creativity with me, ladies.

This layout (a friend's grandson-isn't he the cutest?) was one we did in class yesterday to demo how to use preprinted transparent sheets effectively and efficiently.  Most of us who scrapbook have a cheap frugal side to us...not that we don't spend on scrapping supplies cuz we sure do LOL!, but because we know that if we cut costs in some areas, we have more to spend on new scrapping stuff!  How's that for savings logic?  Save to spend...works for me!

Off to catch up on some business stuff, laundry and putting away the half a studio I brought with me to class yesterday.  Happy Thursday!

It's hard to believe...

that Ashley is graduating from college in May.  Last week, we started actively planning for the event-the invitations, the family party, etc.  Both sets of grandparents are coming into town for the occasion even though they were just here for Christmas.  Ashley is the oldest grandchild and the only girl on both sides of the family and this is the first college graduation amongst the grandchildren, so it's a big deal.

I found a great invitation kit at Staples over the weekend...I know, I know, I should be making them myself but...as you know, the shoemaker's kids are the ones with holes in their shoes. LOL.  These invites are really cool and I'll post one as soon as we format them.  I'm sure that I'll find a way to personalize them...can't leave well enough alone, you know.

This weekend, I was going through boxes of photos from when Ashley was young, looking for pictures for a layout I was doing.  I came across some fun ones that I wanted to share...since I wasn't scrappin' and certainly wasn't blogging when she was young, I missed out on the opportunity to post the cute stuff.  The picture quality isn't all that great...most were taken in the late 80's and early 90's before the point and shoot cameras' quality improved.

With_baby_robin

She's 21 months old in this picture.  She found this baby robin on Vern's cousin's farm and was ready to put her finger into its mouth to feed it!

Moving_day

Can you see the excitement and mischief in her eyes?  They are sparkling.  She's wearing her Dad's shirt and sitting on a stack of boxes...it's moving week in the Wingert household and she's excited about moving into her new house.

Moms_hat_and_boots

She started raiding my closet at a pretty early age...I'm thinking cover of Vogue on this one...snow boots and a red wool felt hat, together with her PJ top...quite the fashion statement!

With_santa_at_tc_eggingtons

Tea With Santa at TC Eggington's was an annual tradition that we upheld for years.  Dressing up, having cider and cookies and getting your picture taken with Santa while you told him what you wanted sure beat waiting in line at the mall!

So here are just a few of the MANY, MANY unscrapped pictures...looks like I have my work cut out for me...when I say that I'm a memory artist for life, that's definitely the truth...it will take a lifetime to scrap them all!

It's been fun going down memory lane with you...isn't it great to share the passion of preserving our memories and sharing our stories with each other?

Happy Monday.

poster for another Scrapbooks, Etc. class...

...on April 5th, 10:30-1:00.  I'm pretty much doing two back-to-back Life Stories classes and this one is "Say It With Flowers", with an emphasis on flower embellishments.  The theme is "Mother"-being a mom, about your mom, about your mother-in-law, about grandmothers and being a grandma...3 layouts just in time for Mother's Day in May.  And yep, that is glitter on that poster...so be prepared to sparkle!

looking for light in the shadows...

Luci_swindoll_journal As a way of saying thanks for playing with the kids, my friend Gina gave me this wonderful journal by Luci Swindoll called I Married Adventure, based on her book by the same title.  What was so cool is that Gina didn't know that Luci is one of my favorite female Christian authors and speakers, a woman with an appreciation for art and beauty, travel and adventure and just common sense living.  Thanks, Gina...I love it!

Anyway, in reading through some of Luci's personal commentaries peppered throughout the journal, I came across this truly insightful paragraph:

"The artist is one who looks at life.  She's interested and interesting.  When a person is interested, she asks herself questions about life.  She's curious about her own philosophy.  She studies what is in front of her and sees deeper than the outside shell.  She wonders. Ponders.  Hunts.  Turns things over to see what makes them work and of what value they are in the overall scheme of things.  And when a person is interesting she talks about what she has learned in an enjoyable way.  What adventures help you capture illumination for your journey?"

This morning, I found light in the shadows...just looking at common things in my home, here's what I found:

                         Palmkentia_2

This is a kentia palm in my bedroom.  I was sitting on the edge of the bed putting on my socks and sneakers to walk the dogs and I saw the sunlight coming through the blinds and casting these ribbons of light onto the plant.  Doesn't it look like a lit up fiber optic Christmas tree?   Those slices of light just transformed the dark corner into a beautiful piece of art.

                         Pittosporum

The large pittosporum bush in the backyard has dark green, glossy leaves which look almost black in the early morning light.  The bush is unspectacular in that light, that is, until you see the beautiful tiny, waxy white and cream flowers nestled between the leaves.  What a transformation those little blossoms bring to a dark, unremarkable bush.

                         Crystal

This crystal hangs from a wire cage which serves as a candleholder on the credenza in my studio.  It was a very thoughtful gift from friend Tena for my birthday last year.  While the piece is beautiful and totally me, it is most noticeable when it is able to capture light and reflect it through the cuts in each crystal.  Add a bit of morning sunshine and this ordinary piece of cut glass suddenly becomes a beautiful, dimensional piece of sculpture.

So, I would pose Luci's question to you, my artistic friends.  What adventures help you capture illumination for your journey?   Have you found light in the shadows today?

so much goodness to share...

The last three days have been filled with good things..so much to share that it's probably going to be a long winded post.

Friday afternoon was a great time.  My friend Gina had asked me if I could do something memory art related with her three children and some of their friends and I agreed.  But, what was I supposed to do with 11-13 year old kids?  I had never taught memory art to kids of any age and just wasn't sure how to plan this play time.  What I finally decided was to totally leave my teaching style and give these kids a time to creatively express themselves and play with materials that I would give them.

There were 8 kids total in Gina's home (Gina has a heart of gold in opening up her home and allowing the kids to play with inks, stamps and glue!)- her two daughters and 5 of their friends and her son, Cameron.  Of the group of 8, there were three sets of twins.  Good thing for me 2 of the sets were fraternal and the identicals dressed entirely differently...YAY!  Ashley came along with me to help...I was glad to have her there.

I brought tons of things for them to play with-patterned paper cut down to 6x6 pieces, bolts of ribbon and seam binding, a big bag of buttons, brads, a huge pile of die cuts in all sorts of shapes, inks and great foam alphabet and background stamps.  There were no kits and no instructions...their homework was to come up with 5 words (good and positive ones!) to describe themselves or someone else.  We started our playtime by creating a 6x6 pamphlet stitched book.  I showed them my sample, told them that this was my book with my title but that I wanted them to do their own thing...and set them loose.  WOW, was I impressed!!!!  They really took what I said to heart...each of them totally got into being creative...they were seriously amazing little artists.  It was cool to see them so uninhibited in their self-expression.  Here's a collage of the afternoon.

Collage_3

I'm missing pictures of Cameron...he didn't sit still long enough for me to snap one...he is one creative dude!  As soon as I get a pic of him from Gina, I'll post it...he will have his own spotlight!  It was fun to watch a couple of the moms and Ashley getting into building their own books and filling them with stuff!  You know that it's a good time when the girls didn't want to stop; in fact, they were pulling things out of my bins and baskets while I was trying to pack up!  Gotta love it.  That was an experience I will treasure for a long time.

Saturday was unusual in that Vern and Ashley were not out riding...they gave their horses a rest after the competition last weekend.  Ashley, Elizabeth and Elizabeth's sister, Erica, made their annual trek to the Renaissance Festival...it was the final weekend of their spring break and they wanted to make the most of it.  Vern and I had a date day...that was really cool.  We went out to lunch at Joe's Farm Grill, just outside of Agritopia in Gilbert.  We had been wanting to try that place...it was not a disappointment.  This restaurant is owned by the same family that owns Joe's Real Barbeque in Gilbert and they have lived up to their reputation for serving great food in a relaxed environment (very kid friendly) for a reasonable price.  It was a relaxing day with no pressures and deadlines...the first weekend this year that I did absolutely nothing related to memory art.

African_daisies On Sunday morning, Vern and I did some much needed yard work in the backyard.  January's heavy frost left us with some dead plants, cracked pots, etc. so we really got into chopping, digging, dragging and replanting.  Here are some African daisies I planted in one of the empty containers.  I actually planted some tomatoes in pots this year...it's been years since I did that so we'll see how it goes.  I'll just share some if we have a bumper crop!

The pond fish came out of hibernation yesterday and got their first feeding of the year.  Every year, I wonder when it's time to start feeding them and every year, they tell me!  They all congregate around the "feeding rock" and get real active and start begging for food...great communicators is what they are!  They were all out there waiting for me this morning again so let the feedings begin!

Last evening, we had a great church service...inspirational...just what I needed.

There's a cool thing happening over at Scrap Scene today...Angie does "Spotlight on Designer" segments and today, it's yours truly.  If you've not been over to that site, you should check it out.  Angie is a gifted networker...she sniffs out all of this great industry information...not just about people but also about events, projects that people have done, sneak peeks, classes, etc.  It's a great way to stay connected to the industry and get the scoop without hopping all over the blogosphere!  Thanks, Angie...you do amazing work on your site!

There's other news to share...but I'll save it for a later post this week.  In the meantime, hope that your weekend was as inspirational as mine was...hope there was a lot of goodness in your life...hope you can share some of it with all of us!  Thanks for reading and sharing!

clearly stated...

It'll be messy.  It'll be fun.

Hope to see you there.

a good day...

Sleeping_dove Today has been a good day.  Pretty low keyed...which I definitely needed, semi-productive, which is good since I like being productive.

This little dove has made this branch of the mesquite tree in our backyard his little morning snooze in the sun spot.  He opened his eyes when I went out on the patio to take his pic but then promptly puffed out his chest, closed his eyes and buried his head in his chest when I lowered the camera.

How cute is that?

Vern and Ashley both did extremely well in their trail competition over the weekend with Ashley placing 3rd and Vern 4th in their class of 14 riders.  I was so proud of them...it was a hard trail and Vern's horse's first time in a competition.  They had a ride photographer who took some great pictures.  I'm waiting to get permission from her before posting a few pics but as soon as I hear from her, you'll be able to see them.

Clearly_1 Today I did some work on my next Scrapbooks, Etc. Life Stories class which will be March 28th from 10:30-1:00.  The theme is Spring and the technique is called Clearly Stated...all about using transparencies like Hambly Studio, clear buttons, alcohol inks, Heidi Swapp ghost shapes, Staz-On inks...  I'm really looking forward to playing with the materials in this class.

Since I don't have any jpegs of projects to give you a sneak peek, I thought I'd include a posterized photo of some of the clear jars in my studio...

Should have projects completed and pics up by next week.

Just wanted to say thanks to you for your wonderful and complimentary comments about the altered vintage record album.  It's exciting to be able to do what I love-art- and use it to make a difference in the lives of other people.  So thanks for your support and kind words...

Off to the kitchen to make some dinner...did I ever tell you I love Costco???  Tonight, it's fresh ravioli with basil tomato sauce...yum.

a creating frenzy...

With Vern and Ashley competing this weekend, I have had the house to myself...end result, a creating frenzy.  This weekend, I worked on a project for a charity art auction to be held in Philadelphia at the end of April.  Tammy Kushnir, well known artist and frequent contributor to Somerset Studio and Legacy (now Somerset Memories), asked if I could contribute a piece of artwork for an auction to benefit Stand Up For Kids, an organization that works with homeless and at risk kids.

There are lots of great causes out there and lots of needs but due to time constraints, I have become pretty selective about my contributions...this one was a no-brainer.  First, I was born in Philadelphia and raised in Huntingdon Valley, a Philly suburb.  I went to college and graduate school there, was married there and worked there for several years before moving to Arizona.  These work experiences were with high risk kids...first, teaching in Inner City Philadelphia and then working with emotionally disturbed girls at St. Joseph's Hall for Girls in Germantown.  Both were eye-opening experiences in many ways.  So...yes...definitely yes for a piece of artwork.

I chose to alter a vintage record album and create a scrapbook that is photo and journaling ready...just slap in those pictures, write a few words and you're done!  I thought I'd share a few of my favorite pages...there are 22 altogether.

DETAILS FROM SOME OF THE PAGES

Don't want to bore you...these were some that I enjoyed creating.  Off to clean up the mess before Vern and Ash come home...in the absence of my family, I have completely taken over the dining table, the kitchen counters, and, of course, my studio table.   It looks like a tornado hit my house...truly...no exaggeration!

If you live in the Philly area and want more details, contact me and I'll give you Tammy's info.

Hope you've had a wonderful and productive weekend.
