sharing a sneak peek...

They're done.  The kits for my online class with Blue Bazaar in Australia are ready to go out the door bright and early tomorrow morning.  Here's a sneak peek of the project we are making...and some of the over 80 pieces that are part of the kit...

Classes with a kit are in limited supply...kitless online classes are unlimited (at least I think they are!).  This is going to be a fun book to make...from my totally unbiased point of view...LOL.

I love making books.  I've been trained by professionals in creating traditional books.  But, do you know what I love best?  Making books that are doable but with a little bit of a challenge, fun, and meaningful...books that share a part of yourself and your family to those that pick them up and read them.  For years, book arts have been shrouded with mystery...mysterious terms and mysterious instructions.  It gives me great personal satisfaction to debunk the mystery. :))

Tbb My passion for books began when in early 2002 when I started teaching book classes at the legendary Memory Lane.  It was an incredible experience to then be able to work with many talented artists as the lead on The Book Book, published by Autumn Leaves.   If you haven't had a chance to see this book, it's really pretty cool...it definitely stretched us as artists to come up with fun, doable but challenging and meaningful projects.  You can get a copy of The Book Book here.

The passion for creating books is still alive...and it just thrills my soul to hear someone who's never made a book rave about the book they just created.  It's music to my ears when someone tells me it wasn't as hard as it looked.  Yes!

So, if you're in Australia, and you're looking to make a fun, doable but challenging, and meaningful book, check out the Blue Bazaar site for details about the class.  Hope to have a chance to chat with you.

living up to its name...

                              Rain_lily

It's called a Rain Lily...we hadn't seen any sign of growth, let alone a blossom all year...I thought it bit the dust.   This past week we got rain and voila!  We have a flower!  Amazing.

Lots to do today...means lots to share later!  Hope you have a fabulous weekend!

good, better, best...

Yesterday was a great day.

I woke up to good...it was cool (well, cooler than it had been :))) and rainy.  Definitely different.

It got better...on Wednesday, I was preparing kits for my Blue Bazaar online class.  I ended up buying all of the We R Memory Keepers Boho Chic paper that I could find at Scrapbooks, Etc. , but it still wasn't enough to fill all of the kits.  I was frantic after I called 6 local scrapbook stores only to learn that none of them carried the final two patterns that I needed.  But...some good news came from Trisha at Scrapbook.com...she was able to find 10 pieces of one of the papers I needed...thanks, Trisha, for taking time out of busy inventory time to look for the papers, and to give me a tour...you are the best!     I was able to order the rest of what I needed at ShopWeR.com, and for a fee, a hefty, heavy paper fee, they would ship the paper to me overnight.  Paper worries...over.

Then the best...a girls' lunch with Tena, her daughter, Alyssa, Liz and Emily and her little cutie, Ivy.  We had such a great time catching up on personal stuff as well as industry happenings...here's a picture taken by Alyssa...after we had eaten...see the big smiles!  Thanks for sharing the pics, Tena.  Check out Tena's blog for some cute photos of Ivy with Liz and Emily.  As I was leaving the restaurant, I bumped into a gal I worked with years ago...both of us were pregnant at the same time and her son was born a month before Ashley arrived.  It was fun to see her and spend some time catching up.

WOWZERS!!!!

Last night, we had the mother of thunderstorms.  In my 26 years of living in Arizona, I've never seen such a display of lightning...it was almost constant for about an hour and half...kind of like the grand finale at a fireworks display.  Vern, Ashley and I all sat in the family room and watched the strikes across the canal which backs up to our house...lightning and thunder was almost simultaneous a number of times.  We lost our power...fortunately for only a few minutes.  The patio was flooded with water...also a first for us...the street looked like a stream.  This morning, the air was so clean and fresh smelling, it was actually cool enough to take the dogs for a walk, and, of course, there was a ton of debris to clean up (but totally worth it!).  Everything is so fresh & green...taking a deep breath outside actually feels healthy!

it's all about the packaging...

Sally_jean_package I am a sucker for great looking packaging.  There are times when I'll buy something in a store because the package was cute...not because I really needed what was inside.  Today, I got some of the vintage art collage charms that I ordered from Sally Jean...more are on the way!

The charms were wrapped inside the little gift box in soft aqua tissue, aqua tulle was wrapped around the gift box and a little package with a candy necklace was included.

Clever...irresistable..cute.   At this point, would you even care what was inside?  I savored the wrapped package for a while but eventually curiosity won out and I just had to open it...

Sally_jean_charms Aren't they just great?  I'm looking forward to getting a couple of houses, as well as a vintage button house in a silver box that she is currently creating for me.  She does exceptional work...the little collages inside are just amazing.

Writing about the impact of packaging reminded me of a package I had received several months ago from Heidi.  I opened up the shipping box to find a pink (of course it was pink!) cake box inside, tied with black tulle with a large Heidi Swapp pink flower attached with a Bazzill black/white polka dotted wings (really big brads).  It was amazingly clever and creative.  I literally kept that box all wrapped up on my counter for a couple of hours...I totally enjoyed the contents when I finally did open it...lots of great new product to work with...always fun!

I really appreciate the extra time and effort that goes into artful wraps...I love the special touches...they make me smile and totally make my day!

this and that...

My_weakness_fabrics Yesterday, I had an awesome class at Ink It...it was the altered cigar box memory box called Wings of Hope.  For those of you who emailed me about buying kits, they will be going out in the next couple of days.  What a great group of women I had in class...not only were they fun to teach but it was wonderful to see and hear how they interacted with each other...some new friendships were made yesterday.

After I finished setting up the classroom, I had a little time to browse and came across some new groupings of fabric...I tossed these three sets into the basket....wonderful combos.  Some of you had emailed me about the fabrics I previously posted and I had mentioned that a good number of them were from a company called My Weakness but that I couldn't find anything about them online.  Well...here's why!  Mary Ellen, owner of Ink it, put these fabrics together herself...  they are her weakness and, I must say, mine as well.  I asked her yesterday if she would take mail orders on them and she said that she really can't because there are no guarantees the fabrics will be available again.  So, if you are a "townie", stop in and see the awesome new combos.  Great to add into a layout or a little fabric book.   And, if you're coming in to town for Art Unraveled, Creative Escape  or the scrapbook convention in September, stop by and ask Mary Ellen about her weakness!

I came home to find Ashley, Elizabeth, and one of Elizabeth's younger sisters, Erica, all scrappin' on the kitchen table...and also spread out on the sofa, the ottoman, the rocker.....  :))  They were having a blast creating their Disney travel journals (Erica was doing some out of her stash of misc. photos)...all three were doing such a great job.  It was fascinating to see how different their styles were...and yet how cool all of their pages were.  I wish I had thought to grab the camera and get a few shots but....I didn't!  Hopefully, they'll do it again sometime soon and I'll be able to capture it and post a pic.

New_kitchen_scales_1 On Friday, I went over to Comp USA to pick up some yellow ink for my Epson printer.  I swear that printer eats yellow ink for breakfast, lunch and dinner...plus snacks.  I have two packages of colored ink, each one is missing only the yellow ink because I've had to replace it so often...isn't that weird?  Wonder why it does that?  Anyway, while I was there, I decided to pop into Marshalls...I love browsing through that store...you just never know what you're going to find.  I had been looking on e-bay for vintage kitchen scales to replace the very functional, but very unattractive (and very unsexy) postal scales I've been using to weigh out coffee grounds, horse supplements, etc.  What I was finding was that the best scales are from the UK, but with the pound so strong against the dollar, the prices were pretty high and the shipping was even higher.  A lot of the scales from the USA were so rusted, I'd be afraid to bring them into my kitchen, let alone put food on them...plus on quite a few of them, the numbers were worn off.  Well, I love vintage, but in this case, I needed practical as well...how in the world would I know what I had if I didn't see the numbers?  Well, back to Marshalls...I'm walking down the housewares aisle...never know what you'll find, right?  Out of the corner of my eye, I see this kitchen scale.  I backtrack and take another look...I can't believe my eyes.  Here's this brand new scale, made in the UK, just the right color and, get this...at the very nice price of $14.99.  I grabbed it off the shelf...the only one there!!!!!...and went off to find a cart.  When I got to the cash register, the cashier couldn't believe I had kitchen scales in my cart.  She told me that she had just gone to Wal-Mart and picked up a set (not made in the UK!) for 14.99.  She was quite upset that she missed that good buy in her own store!  I'm tickled...off the scale tickled...hee, hee.

This is hibernation time in Phoenix when we stay inside and hug the air conditioning vents...most pools feel like bath water this time of year so aren't too refreshing.  Even the dogs have their spots in front of the vents...Thatcher in the family room and Bodie in the Master Bath...smart puppies!

Hope you're having a great weekend.

with a flourish...

...may I present my newest acquisitions?????

Flourish_stamps Just delivered from Stampers Anonymous...flourish stamps from the Tim Holtz collection.

I am totally looking forward to using these amazing images on my pages.

Indeed.

Just a quick post here...am off and running to pack kits for tomorrow's class!

Enjoy your Friday.

Signing off with a flourish (so to speak)!

fly with confidence...

The past three days have been crazy busy...Tena and I have been finishing the last of the gallery projects, all of which are due to the pubs by Friday (yeah, this week).  You probably think we are procrastinators...well, maybe a little...but the main reason for us cutting it so close is that we needed to wait until all of the guest artist projects were done so we could fill in the gaps...IT''S DONE!  Boxed up and shipped out yesterday...with a huge smile!

I have had an enormous amount of help from Ashley during these past few days.  Amazingly enough, life in other areas doesn't stop when I'm on a deadline...:)  It was so great to send her out every day to run all of my errands...lists, debit card, checks, cash, mail, boxes...you get the idea!

She did everything I asked her to do...bought everything (well, except for the cooking sherry...dumbo here didn't realize you had to be 21 to buy cooking sherry....it's cooking sherry, for crying out loud!  Do they really think people will drink that stuff?).  Anyway, I appreciate all of her help and the fact that I don't feel buried this morning!

A couple of months ago, I was asked to do a layout for a charity auction in Australia.  The theme of the book was motherhood and each contributor was to create a page about what being a mom meant to them.  Here's what I created:

                      Fly_with_confidence

I am really proud of Ashley, and delighted with the strong wings that she has developed.

And, can I just say this?  It's a good feeling to send her out with a list while I'm creating art in my jammies!  One of the joys of motherhood! :))

life is a bowl of cherries...

                         Bowl_of_cherries

...even though I woke up feeling like I was in the pits!  The sinus headache that had been irritating me for the past week was bad, really bad...never a fun way to start the day.  A couple of pills and cups of coffee later and I could actually focus on what was around me.

Know what my remedy is for combatting the "in the pits" feeling?  Think of the good things...the things that make me happy.  So, today, here are some of the eggs in my happiness basket...

  • I have a great husband who is also my best friend...he's a wonderful listener, great to bounce ideas off of, and lots of fun to be around
  • I enjoy spending time with Ashley, who is a friend as well as my daughter.  We had a great time shopping for paper and stuff at Scrapbooks, Etc. yesterday
  • There was a cup of fresh raspberries in the fridge...just perfect for my breakfast
  • Ranier cherries are in season and there's a bowl of them in the fridge
  • Project countdown  for our book is down to 1.5 projects to be done before Wednesday afternoon
  • Laundry is almost all caught up
  • I have a brand new release from Nora Roberts on my nightstand...my reward for finishing the projects!
  • I have a fun class that I'm teaching at Ink It on Saturday

You know something, I feel better...between the meds and focusing on some good stuff, I can say that life really is a bowl of {Ranier} cherries, pits and all...off to finish the .5 part of my project!

I Never Imagined...

Today marks my 100th post.  I started thinking about this blog, about journaling, about making new friends through the process...I honestly never imagined this.

It reminded me of the project I created for the Basic Grey Be Bold contest last year.  It was a round accordion fold book cut to fit inside a vintage film cannister given to me by one of my students.  I chose the topic, "I Never Imagined" and wrote about the past 5 years of my life...the journey in the memory arts world that has brought me to where I am today.  The friends I've made, both near and on the other side of the world...being able to create and write...inspiring others and being inspired...all amazing rewards I've experienced.

It's a happy story...not really deep, just fun and very exciting.  I didn't win anything for my entry from Basic Grey but what it did for me was to tangibly express my gratitude to the many people who have been part of my life in these past few years.  I thought I'd share my entry pages...here they are.  Each page contains something that either lifts or pulls out that tells the story behind the pictures...
